Humanizing hospital rooms: merging medical care and architectural design

September 10, 2024 tedisel bed head units, Hospitals, Medical equipment

Hospital humanization focuses on designing spaces that prioritize the patient, creating environments that facilitate faster recovery by providing safety, rest, and care.

When a patient is admitted for a medium to long period, the hospital room temporarily becomes their home. Therefore, the design of these rooms must go beyond functionality and traditional design, embracing also the humanization of the space.

Importance of the Environment in Patient Recovery

There is a direct relationship between patient recovery and the surrounding environment. In recent years, there have been numerous changes and improvements in healthcare architecture, with an increasing focus on a more human and approachable architecture, moving away from the overly medicalized environment. This trend is also reflected in the choice of medical equipment that adapts to this new humanized architecture.

“At Tedisel Medical, we are committed to developing, innovating, and manufacturing hospital equipment to improve staff efficiency and provide quality patient care.”

Humanizing Hospital Rooms: Merging Medical Care and Architectural Design

Humanization of Hospital Spaces

The humanization of hospital spaces goes beyond providing a pleasant environment for patients; it also involves creating an optimal environment for medical and support staff. It is crucial to design considering the needs of all the people interacting in the hospital environment.

For example, the Hospital del Mar has initiated a significant architectural transformation process to adapt to the demands for greater comfort and functionality for patients and healthcare professionals.

This project focuses on the new hospitalization areas, where priority has been given to the inclusion of natural light, controlled lighting systems and specially designed furniture to enhance the experience of all involved. In addition, advances have been introduced such as electronic tablets placed next to each bed, which will not only function as work tools for medical staff, but also as sources of entertainment and education for patients, even offering health advice. Lockers with keypad access have also been installed to ensure the safety and comfort of patients during their stay. This comprehensive approach seeks not only to optimize medical care, but also to enhance well-being and quality of life in the hospital environment.

The hospitalization areas have been designed with wide spaces and corridors, and the nursing checkpoint has been located at strategic points to facilitate communication with patients. A highlight has been the emphasis on the humanization of the spaces, with the collaboration of artist Perico Pastor, a Hospital del Mar user. Pastor has embellished the bathrooms in all the rooms with a dozen of his original works. In his own words:

“Art is to share and to accompany. So, imagine going to a hospital and, when you feel down and enter the bathroom, you find a painting, a work of art!”

Importance of Materials and Design in Hospital Humanization

Careful choice of materials can have a significant impact on the transformation of hospital spaces, adding warmth and comfort. Using natural materials such as wood to clad medical equipment can generate a more welcoming atmosphere, providing patients and families with a sense of familiarity and tranquility in the hospital environment. A prime example of this philosophy is evident in our projects, such as the Lusíadas Porto Hospital, where our AIS headboard adapts to specific needs, always offering the best solution for patients.

At Tedisel Medical, we are committed to developing, innovating, and manufacturing hospital equipment to improve staff efficiency and provide quality patient care
Hospital Lusíadas Porto

The choice of furniture also plays a crucial role in this perception. Selecting the right medical equipment, which not only fulfills its technical function but also significantly enhances the ambiance of the room, contributes to a more human and less institutional atmosphere.

At Tedisel Medical, we are committed to integrating medical devices into the design of hospital equipment with our bed head units. We design and equip equipment with wall covering options, which helps reduce the feeling of being in a hospital environment and creates a more welcoming and less clinical environment.

Our products stand out for their adaptability in terms of lighting. We recognize that indirect light can create a relaxed atmosphere, while focused lighting is essential for medical procedures. For this reason, we at Tedisel strive to offer a wide variety of lighting options, ranging from direct to indirect and night lighting. We introduce our Aura Light model to complement all hospitalization areas, ensuring adequate lighting for every need. In addition, we understand the importance of acoustic comfort, proper ventilation and humidity control to avoid nuisances such as unwanted noise, unpleasant odors and excessive humidity. Consequently, we are committed to ensuring that all our products comply with established regulations and requirements, ensuring an optimal and comfortable hospital environment for patients and medical staff alike.

More private spaces and recovery-enhancing spaces

Designing more private and recovery-focused spaces is an increasingly relevant trend in the hospital setting. Creating environments where patients can feel sheltered from noise and hustle and bustle is crucial to their well-being. Examples such as the therapeutic gardens in the new extension of the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre illustrate this evolution towards a more serene and comforting environment. These open spaces and the integration of green areas not only promote physical recovery, but also contribute to humanizing the hospital environment, providing a haven for calm and healing.

“Functionality and optimization in all hospital areas are paramount elements that should not be neglected in the humanization process.”

The rooms must be well designed, with an optimal arrangement of hospital equipment and an appropriate selection of materials to facilitate the work of healthcare personnel. Involving staff in the design from the outset is crucial to ensure an efficient working environment. It is vital to ensure sufficient space around beds for staff and equipment, as well as accessible toilets and adequate space for wheelchair use and assistance. In addition, the integration of new technologies in hospitals can boost efficiency and improve the patient recovery process by implementing humanization projects such as those that many hospitals, such as the Vall d’Hebron Hospital Campus, are progressively implementing. Mobile applications can promote patient participation and improve direct communication between patients and healthcare staff, thus optimizing workflow and medical care.

Optimizing the Hospital Environment: A Compassionate Approach to Patient and Medical Staff Care

December 19, 2023 tedisel bed head units, Hospitals, Medical equipment

“We believe in environments that not only heal but also comfort and protect.”

Innovation in Hospital and Ward Design

Hospital design goes far beyond simple aesthetics. Hospital architecture has evolved by understanding the vital role that the environment plays in the recovery and well-being of patients.

It is therefore essential that the design of clinics and hospitals be innovative, creating spaces that not only ensure safety and comfort but also facilitate the work of healthcare professionals.

The impact of interior design in clinics and healthcare areas has undergone remarkable transformations in recent years. In the past, the focus of medical clinic design was primarily on functionality. While this remains crucial, equal importance is now given to generating well-being for users.

Recently, the design of hospital environments has been oriented toward eliminating the coldness and lack of personality associated with these places. Instead, priority is given to creating welcoming and friendly spaces that are at the same time safe and functional.

Optimizing the Hospital Environment: A Compassionate Approach to Patient and Medical Staff Care

Optimizing Spaces with Warmth and Efficiency

At Tedisel Medical, we provide innovative solutions such as the Antea and Ais models to create inviting environments that enrich empathetic rooms. We strive to support both medical professionals and patients by:

In Tedisel Medical we are aware of the importance of participating in this type of fairs in the sector. Attending an event of this magnitude with a stand is the perfect opportunity to show the benefits of our products or services to our clients, suppliers, etc. This Seminar, in particular, is always the ideal place for those

“This event is the most important meeting forum in the hospital engineering sector and allows us to have the opportunity to greet customers and partners, with whom we have been working for many years. It is very important for us to exchange information and serves as a thermometer of the state of the sector.”

_ Luis Guallar. Commercial Director of Tedisel Medical

Thus, attendance at trade fairs, especially in B2B environments, is a crucial element for the communication of companies, and offers multiple possibilities for attendees.

We can highlight that:

  • They are a platform for innovation that helps to be more competitive.
  • It facilitates exposure and personal product presentations
  • It allows to retain and expand the customer base
  • It boosts the increase of exports

In short, participating in trade fairs of this magnitude allows companies to evaluate their competitors by exchanging information and meetings, in order to attract and retain new and potential customers.

Here you will find some photos of Medicip Health’s stand, where they exhibited their product SIDI FLANDES perfectly integrated with our AIS headboard with the Barcelona skyline design.

Hospital bed head units of today and the future

June 27, 2022 tedisel bed head units, Hospitals, Medical equipment

For some years now, hospital bed heads units, driven by the improvement in hospital equipment, have been providing an optimised, intuitive environment in accordance with the space in which they are located

That is to say: they are the perfect complement to hospital beds, forming a block that is designed and installed according to the type of patient who is going to use it and the medical speciality, floor or type of hospital.

In this post, Tedisel would like to talk about the main characteristics of hospital bed head units, their functions, trends in the health sector and what options are available in the market.

What are hospital headboards?

Hospital headboards, far from what they may indicate at first glance, are not the equivalent of the headboard of a normal, typical household bed.

They are part of the hospital bed, yes, but with a different function and design. Specifically, they are the structures, usually arranged vertically or horizontally, which are attached to the wall and are placed precisely on the headboard area of the bed or near the side of the bed.

What are they for?

We are referring to those elements that, when we have been patients in a hospital, we have used to warn the nurses of anything. These devices light up indirectly in case someone has to enter or leave the room.

Among their main characteristics is the fact that they have numerous sockets, each with different purposes, but especially electrical, data and gas sockets. On the other hand, we must distinguish between headboards designed for common hospitalisations, or those intended for ICU units, resuscitation rooms, post-operative units, etc. In this case, they are usually more sophisticated.

In any case, they are completely common and necessary elements in hospitals all over the world.

Characteristics and trends in headboards

Hospital bedside cabinets act as devices that have been conceived to provide the physician with close and simple access to supplies needed for therapy. As we said, this is the case of gases, vacuum or electrical energy, fundamentally. In addition, the bedside cabinets provide the patient with ‘extra’ services, such as lighting, alarms or communication systems.

These bed heads form an aesthetically and functionally harmonious whole with the bed, one of the most important parts of the patient unit. The function of the bed in the hospital is to accommodate the patient and has characteristics specifically adapted to his or her ailments. It must always be in perfect condition to ensure that the patient is comfortable, as this is where he or she will spend most of the day during hospitalisation.

Whether headboards are intended for Critical Care services (ICU, ICU, etc.), emergency / resuscitation services, wards of intermediate complexity, or other hospital sectors where their services are required, in the last decade headboards have taken on a new dimension at an aesthetic level, as a whole.

As a result of the greater importance given to the holistic and biophilic experience in hospitals, to the well-being not only of the patient but also of the medical staff, to facilitating their work and the hospitalisation periods of users, headboards have been adapted to blend in with their surroundings. What does this mean? That the type of hospital headboard of yesteryear, useful and efficient but alien to the style of the bed and the room, no longer applies in the new and remodelled hospitals.

Bed heads today are part of a whole: of the bed, of the room, of the type of hospital and of the type of patient. They are oriented and designed specifically for a particular profile, be it paediatric patients, VIP stays, etc.

An essential piece of hospital equipment

The hospital bedside goes far beyond the mere hook-up of electrical and diagnostic equipment and the basic functions of lighting, voice recognition and oxygen-enriched gas outlet.

This complex system is continuously being improved to be more omnichannel and adaptive than ever before with a single device. This means that the headboards are intended to facilitate services to all types of patients, from those able to alert the nurse at the push of a button to those who are intubated, sedated or temporarily immobile.

Solutions such as push-button knob, voice activation, etc. are part of the hardware that takes care of the nurse-patient call. Which is ultimately one of the main functions that is not fixed or that can lead to the most uncertainty.

The most complete catalogue of headboards

In Tedisel Medical we have a wide catalogue of hospital bed heads, integrated wall systems, for all types of patient rooms in hospitals.

Our headboards follow the trend in the health sector of fully integrating the headboard into the room design. Especially in new constructions and remodelling of health centres, this is what is being sought after, both for aesthetic reasons and for simplicity and ease. In short, headboards are elements that offer a very important service, that influence the well-being and recovery of the patient, and that are increasingly integrated at an aesthetic and formal level.

Among our headboards, the following stand out:

Aura
Our modular bed head
It can be customised to adapt to the needs of different areas: hospitalisation, critical areas, operating theatres, etc. It is the perfect equipment to hold different accessories. From a simple rail to a complete sliding system with infusion pumps and trays.
